The Green Bay Packers are not known for being aggressive in free agency, which is why the signing of star tight end Martellus Bennett shocked the entire fan base. Ted Thompson knew that he needed to bring in more help in order to get back to the Super Bowl, and Bennett was exactly the kind of impact player that the Packers needed to find.
Bennett will add the type of security blanket that the Packers haven’t had since Jermichael Finley. Aaron Rodgers had some of his best years when he had Finley to throw to. Now, Bennett is ready to change the entire offense for the Packers and get Rodgers back to having a big, athletic target to fall back on when needed.
Last season with the New England Patriots, Bennett ended up catching 55 passes for 701 yards and seven touchdowns. He may not have had an eye-popping season, but he was a consistent piece for the New England offense.
What exactly will Bennett add to the Green Bay offense that will make them that much more dangerous?
First of all, the Packers’ offense has struggled with consistency over the past couple of years. Part of that struggling has had to do with receivers not being able to work themselves open. As good as Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, and Davante Adams are, they are not always able to force mismatches.
Very few teams have a linebacker or defensive back capable of shutting Bennett down. He will be able to force mismatches most weeks and will give Rodgers a target to turn to in almost any situation.
Secondly, the Packers have had some troubles in the red zone over the past couple years. Rodgers utilized Finley well during their years together, which is exactly the kind of role that Bennett will have. Having that big of a target in red zone situations will make the Packers much more successful.
Bringing in a player fresh off a championship will be good for the Packers’ locker room a well. Green Bay has a lot of young players who haven’t won a ring yet. Bennett was one of the most entertaining and energetic players on the Patriots’ roster last season, and he will be infectious once again with the Packers.
Bennett may not be the best blocking tight end in the NFL, but he has shown the ability to do so when he wants to. He will be asked to step up in that area at times throughout the upcoming season as well and should be able to come through for the Packers.
All of that being said, it will be interesting to see what ends up happening with the Packers this season. They certainly look like a championship contender on paper and have improved on both sides of the football. Bennett may very well be one of the biggest pickups of the entire offseason when everything is said and done.
Expect to see him put up big numbers this season and end up being a go-to guy for Rodgers. Bennett may not be a superstar name, but he will have a superstar impact for the Packers in 2017.
