Knicks Rumors: New York Tanking Next Season To Land No. 1 Pick In 2018 NBA Draft? [Opinion]

The New York Knicks are entering a new era after three disappointing years under former team president Phil Jackson. The Knicks are now controlled by acting team president Steve Mills, who has a clear vision for New York. However, the latest rumors suggest that one of the potential plans for the Knicks include tanking next season to have a big chance of obtaining the first overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

Marc Berman of The New York Post reported that Mills wants to a start a youth movement centered on Kristaps Porzingis and 2017 first round pick Frank Ntilikina. One executive told Berman that the Knicks are going to tank next season to bolster their chances of getting the 2018 first overall pick. Even though the Knicks are not going to confirm or announce their plans, they have no other choice but to rebuild.

“The focus is on young players, but they still need some veteran presence. They’re waiting to see where there are good young players that would take shorter deals. The focus is definitely on building around young guys.”

The Knicks endured a lot of disappointment and dysfunction under the management of Phil Jackson. The 11-time champion head coach built around Carmelo Anthony but it did not work. Jackson also signed Joakim Noah to a massive contract and he ended up missing more than half of the season. The only good thing done by Jackson is drafting Kristaps Porzingis, who was alienated by Jackson towards his final days as the team president of New York.

Steve Mills is the current general manager and acting team president of the New York Knicks.

But now that the New York Knicks are under Steve Mills, the fans can look forward to better days but they have to be patient. The main priority for the Knicks is to move on from Carmelo Anthony, who has a no-trade clause in his contract. Anthony outlasted Phil Jackson in New York but he would need to move on for the Knicks to become relevant.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Anthony is open to waiving his no-trade clause for the Cleveland Cavaliers or the Houston Rockets. Anthony can also negotiate a buyout with the New York Knicks and there are reports that he prefers signing with either the Cavaliers or the Rockets. Anthony’s estranged wife, La La, also confirmed in an interview that Carmelo leaving New York is possible this summer.

If the Knicks manage to at least acquire an asset or two for Carmelo Anthony, then it would be a good deal. New York knows that it has to build around Kristaps Porzingis, who is one of the best young players in the NBA today. And if the Knicks successfully tank next season, they can draft Michael Porter Jr. first overall in 2018.

Michael Porter Jr. is the consensus first overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

Incoming Missouri freshman Michael Porter Jr. is the consensus first overall selection in the 2018 NBA Draft. Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report described Porter Jr. as an explosive player with a shot, being compared to Brandon Ingram of the Los Angeles Lakers. The only difference is Porter Jr. has an NBA ready body.

The Knicks and their fans have endured a lot since they lost the 1999 NBA Finals. New York has to endure a little more disappointment and losing a lot of games before finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Nevertheless, these are still just rumors and the Knicks could sign a new team president.
