Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom were a huge success in Pirates of the Caribbean 5. Captain Jack Sparrow is not about to be killed off, despite unsubstantiated rumors, according to Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of the Pirates franchise.
Johnny Depp, despite theories to the contrary, is probably the greatest single element in the appeal of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Bringing back Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley was nothing short of genius as well though. Jerry Bruckheimer told Digital Spy, “Johnny is absolutely key to the success of Pirates.“
Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom were the dual heartthrobs of Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. In 2003, fans on the movie’s forums would argue incessantly over who was hotter, Johnny Depp or Orlando Bloom.
Pirates of the Caribbean fans were hooked on Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow. Fully half of the female fans thought Elizabeth Swan, portrayed by Keira Knightley, ought to forget Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner and take up with the lusty pirate, known as Jack Sparrow.
Pirates of the Caribbean writers had not really intended for Jack Sparrow to be so hot. Orlando Bloom was obviously the intended leading man as Will Turner. Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow was a friend of Will’s father and presumably old enough to be Turner’s father.
Johnny Depp, currently 54 years old, is actually Orlando Bloom’s senior by 14 years since Bloom is now 40. At the time though, Orlando Bloom was in his prime at 26, while the Jack Sparrow actor was 40.
Johnny Depp took what would have been a character role in Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, originally almost given to Jim Carrey by the way, and turned Jack Sparrow into the hottest thing women had ever seen. Jack Sparrow led to Depp winning People‘s Sexiest Man Alive for the first time in 2003.
Orlando Bloom, however, didn’t do so bad in the heartthrob department either in the wake of Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. There will always be girls who want the young gentleman who is faithful and true, but there are at least as many who want that roguish pirate who struts around like a rock star.
Johnny Depp’s imitation of the Keith Richards swagger, coupled with that incredible face, drove females of all ages wild, starting with girls with fathers younger than Depp and on up to those ladies in geriatric care. Women were hot for Depp as Jack Sparrow as well as Orlando Bloom in 2003.
Orlando Bloom was usurped, or at least challenged, in many ways in his leading man role in Pirates of the Caribbean, simply because of whatever chemistry was created when Johnny Depp decided to wear a pirate’s costume and move like Keith Richards.
For some Johnny Depp fans, the love affair didn’t start with Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean. Johnny Depp had already been in 21 Jump Street and had won a lot of hearts as Edward Scissorhands as well. For many though, Jack Sparrow was on a whole other level.
Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow costume, his sexy Keith Richards swagger, and Johnny’s amazing eyeliner-accented eyes hit a primal chord that promoted Jack Sparrow to a new kind of sexual archetype. What would Carl Jung have said about Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow? No one knows, but his daughter would have understood.
Johnny Depp isn’t one of those actors who has to be hot in every movie though. In Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, his portrayal of Hunter S. Thompson was more Hunter than Johnny. Depp has had a variety of sexy and non-sexy roles, but at the end of the day, he’s Johnny Depp and that alone makes him hot.
Many in the press point to nearly an exact moment though when Johnny Depp the man, not Jack Sparrow the legendary pirate of Pirates of the Caribbean, started to look a bit frumpy. The Daily Mail notes a point in September of 2015 when Johnny was spotted out with Amber Heard looking less than perfect. Was Depp losing his Mojo?
Johnny Depp continued to decline in the media’s perception during his marriage to Amber Heard until it happened in June of 2016. Page Six said Depp became a “pariah.” The headline was worse, calling Johnny a “washed up hobo.”
“He was, in short, the coolest. And then, less than two weeks ago, Depp became a pariah, accused by his estranged wife, Amber Heard, of domestic violence.”
Marilyn Manson is quoted in the Inquisitr explaining that Johnny Depp was being “crucified unjustly” in the media following Amber Heard’s allegations which have yet to be substantiated or proven. Police said they found no evidence after Johnny Depp’s alleged attack on her with a cell phone — of all things. The phone allegedly left a famous and highly self-photographed welt on her face.
Orlando Bloom has also spoken up for his Pirates of the Caribbean co-star according to the Inquisitr. Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp have been through a lot together, and Orlando Bloom says Depp is a “stand-up” guy.
“The man that I know and love is the man who’s here tonight, and he’s like on form and does everything the right way. You know, people go through all kinds of weird stuff in the world and it’s just a shame that it has to be dragged out in public. Because, God knows he’s been one of the most private and stand-up people I’ve ever met.”
Johnny Depp’s mother passed away after an extended illness, the day before this alleged altercation. Amber alleged that Depp tossed an iPhone at her. Remember, an iPhone weighs about five ounces. Ever since then, certain members of the press have seemed to enjoy smearing the Pirates of the Caribbean actor.
Fast forward to 2017, Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp again co-star in Pirates of the Caribbean. Depp is as hot as ever as Jack Sparrow in the new movie. Some say it’s trick photography or heavy stage makeup, but there are videos of Johnny entertaining at children’s hospitals, usually from cell phone cameras. There are no tricks. Johnny is still devastatingly handsome as Jack Sparrow.
Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp are again heartthrobs in Pirates of the Caribbean, but now there is a third heartthrob. Brenton Thwaites was introduced in Pirates of the Caribbean 5, and now the Hindustan Times is reporting that Jack Sparrow will be killed off in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and replaced by Brenton Thwaites. They cite an unnamed source for this tidbit of information and no other evidence. Yet many other journalists, who should know better, are reporting the story.
Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer tells a different story in a legitimate interview with Digital Spy a couple of weeks ago. After working with Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Brenton Thwaites on Pirates of the Caribbean: Deadmen Tell No Tales, Mr. Bruckheimer seems to completely debunk this latest gossip about Jack Sparrow being killed off.
“I just don’t see it [working on Pirates of the Caribbean without Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow]. The secret to any successful franchise is picking talented people, and Johnny is absolutely key to the success of Pirates. He’s such a unique character, such an endearing character, and such an irreverent character all in one.”
Johnny Depp will be in Pirates of the Caribbean 6, if and when such a movie is made, according to the one man who should know. Hopefully, Orlando Bloom and Brenton Thwaites will be in Pirates of the Caribbean 6 also, but Jack Sparrow will definitely be there.
Other Johnny Depp rumors are also debunked by Jerry Bruckheimer. All those reports of Johnny being difficult on set were put to rest according to what the producer told Digital Spy.
“He hasn’t changed at all! That’s what’s so great about him. He’s still the same guy he was in the first one. He’s still out to get what’s good for him. Johnny himself hasn’t changed either. We’ve worked together on six movies now and he’s just an amazing individual.”
Johnny Depp’s role as Jack Sparrow is quite safe according to Jerry Bruckheimer. Hopefully, when the time comes Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Brenton Thwaites can be the three heartthrobs of Pirates of the Caribbean 6.
“Pirates has become a family now. We’ve got talented people in every position – people who have worked on them since the beginning. I think that’s one of the reasons the franchise keeps on working.”
