Roman Reigns’ Actions On ‘Monday Night Raw’ Signify Start Of Heel Turn [Opinion]

Roman Reigns has been a polarizing character in the WWE for years now. While he has many fans who love to cheer for him every chance they get, there are just as many who boo him loudly. After this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw, there were a lot of things that happened on the show that made it look like the WWE was finally starting to move Roman Reigns more to the heel side.

It all started in the promo that opened Monday Night Raw. General Manager Kurt Angle came out to the ring and told the crowd that Braun Strowman might miss up to six months following his surgery on his elbow. Angle then revealed that Strowman was lining up for a WWE Universal Championship match with Brock Lesnar and now a new number one contender needed to be named.

Interestingly, this might confuse some fans since the WWE had made no indication that they were heading to a Braun Strowman vs. Brock Lesnar match. This was going to happen at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view.

The match there was going to be an Ambulance Match between Braun Strowman and Roman Reigns with the winner getting a title shot at Brock Lesnar at Great Balls of Fire in July. With that match not happening, it looked like Roman Reigns was next in line, but the WWE seems to want to hold off that match until WrestleMania 34 next year.

As a result, Kurt Angle made a new match with five men fighting at Extreme Rules for the number one contender position and the WWE Universal Championship shot at Great Balls of Fire in July. Those men were Roman Reigns, Finn Balor, Seth Rollins, Samoa Joe, and Bray Wyatt.

That brought out Roman Reigns first. Normally, Roman is ready for a fight and always likes to prove himself in the ring. However, something changed on Monday Night Raw this week. Reigns acted smug and told Kurt Angle that he didn’t like the idea and he should be the only contender to Brock Lesnar since he took out Braun Strowman.

Most of the time, a face in the WWE takes on all challenges and proves he deserves the title shot. In this one promo moment, Roman Reigns made it clear he didn’t want to fight for the title shot and wanted it handed to him.

When Finn Balor came out next, the fans clearly loved the Demon King more than they loved Roman Reigns. That is when Finn Balor acted like the face and said that he deserved as much a chance as anyone since he was a former WWE Universal Champion and never lost the title.

Roman Reigns then played the bully. He told Finn Balor that he wasn’t good enough to beat Brock Lesnar. Reigns said that Finn had a lot of heart but wasn’t as good as him. Finn Balor reminded Roman Reigns, and the fans, that he beat Roman Reigns to get the title shot last year.

Roman Reigns and Finn Balor then fought on the show and Roman Reigns got his win back, tying the two men with one win each. That will play into the match at Extreme Rules where there are two faces (Seth Rollins and Finn Balor), two heels (Bray Wyatt and Samoa Joe), and Roman Reigns.

There is almost no chance that Roman Reigns wins the match because the WWE wants to save Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns for a match bigger than Extreme Rules. There are also rumors that Braun Strowman will fight Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam, and the six months down time is just a storyline injury and the original six to eight weeks is actually the right number.

Braun Strowman is a heel and will face Brock Lesnar, who might end up as a face at SummerSlam. If the WWE is turning Brock Lesnar into a face, a name like Samoa Joe or Bray Wyatt could win at Extreme Rules. It also means that a match down the line could see a face Brock Lesnar battle a heel Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 34.

That change could have started this week on Monday Night Raw. Roman Reigns is acting more arrogant and is no longer acting like a beloved face. It might be time for Roman Reigns to finally go pure evil.
