Mark Buehrle and his family are getting ready to move to Canada . Buehrle’s dog Slater, however, won’t be able to make the trip.
The MLB pitcher was recently traded to the Toronto Blue Jays , and pit bulls are not allowed in the province of Ontario. That means that Slater, an American Staffordshire terrier (a pit bull breed), will not be allowed in the country. Buehrle hasn’t made any announcement about the location of his new residence, but, judging by the dedicated animal lover’s past decisions, Buehle may be making a long commute from Quebec.
Buehrle faced a similar problem when he played for the Miami Marlins . Miami-Dade County also has a pit bull ban, so the MLB pitcher decided to set up camp in Broward County. Buehle had to drive a few extra miles to the field, but he also got to keep his dog.
That could be a little more difficult this time around.
Quebec is the closest major city in Canada that allows pit bulls. That’s a 6 hour drive. Buehrle may also choose to live in Buffalo, New York. Buffalo is only a couple of hours from Toronto, but the MLB player would have to deal with crossing the border every day.
Buehrle and his wife started a petition in Miami to get the pit bull ban lifted, and they’ll probably try to do the same in Toronto. For now, however, it looks like Buehrle is going to have to get used to a long commute if he wants to keep his dog Slater.
