Glee star Naya Rivera recently revealed that she wants her character, Santana Lopez, to get her own spinoff.
“She can do anything,” Rivera said at Elle ‘s 20th annual Women in Hollywood gala last week. “That’s the beauty of Santana.”
Series creator Ryan Murphy hasn’t said anything about giving characters their own spinoffs. But he did recently announce that the show’s sixth season would be its last. He also said that Cory Monteith’s death this summer forced him to change the finale.
“The final year of the show, which will be next year, was designed around Rachel and Cory/Finn’s story,” Murphy told reporters at the a Paley Center event honoring FX Networks earlier this month.
“I always knew that, I always knew how it would end. I knew what the last shot was – he was in it. I knew what the last line was – she said it to him,” he added. “So when a tragedy like that happens you sort of have to pause and figure out what you want to do, so we’re figuring that out now.”
Naya Rivera said the cast knew the end was coming.
“We always kind of knew that,” she said. “We’ve had an amazing run on this show, and so whenever it ends, it has to end. Unfortunately, it can’t go on forever. But, I’m just really grateful that I was on it for this long.”
Shortly after Monteith’s death on July 13, Rivera spoke out about how much he meant to her.
“Cory was and always will be a part of my own family and a good friend,” she said. “He was a special part of this world and will forever be missed.”
Earlier this month, Naya Rivera and boyfriend Big Sean became engaged . They began dating in April.
