Adam Sandler and his production company Happy Madison are at the center of a very painful lawsuit by a carpenter who was injured on the set of That’s My Boy .
Not only was the former Saturday Night Live cast member’s 2011 comedy a box office disaster, someone also lost a few fingers trying to bring the movie to life.
Boston carpenter Richard Houpert is suing Adam Sandler , Happy Madison, and Sony Pictures after partially severing several fingers while building sets for That’s My Boy . According to The Hollywood Reporter , Houpert is seeking $1 million in damages.
In addition to cutting off parts of his fingers, the carpenter fractured his hand in several places. Houpert’s complaint states that his fingers were drawn into the table saw he was using to build the movie’s sets. The injuries to his dominant hand have reportedly cost him quite a bit of income.
“The cost to provide saws with saw stops, guards, or other safety equipment was minimal compared to the enormity of the risk of injury to the users of the saws,” his attorney explained in court documents.
Cinema Blend reports that the carpenter also named Black & Decker in his complaint. Houpert stated that the equipment he used on the set of the film was “not of merchantable quality and unfit for its intended and forseeable uses.” The tools were also described as “dangerous and defective.”
Unfortunately for Sony, Adam Sandler, and Happy Madison, That’s My Boy could end up costing them even more money. According to the numbers posted at Box Office Mojo , the comedy was about as far away from being a hit as you can possibly get.
During its theatrical run in North America, the Adam Sandler flick only made around $36 million from ticket sales. The foreign totals weren’t much better; overseas audiences only shelled out $20 million to catch the comedy in cinemas. The $70 million endeavor couldn’t recoup its budget.
