Google co-founder Sergey Brin isn’t just about creating useful web platforms and mobile OS’ that piss off Apple executives. Brin is also an investor in our future. Case-in-point, the billionaire entrepreneur was one of the investors in the recently announced €250,000 (approx. $331,425) lab-grown beef burger project.
According to the Google co-founder, he invested in cultured burger meat to help further animal rights.
In a video interview with The Guardian , Brin explains that the life of cows and other animals are not as idyllic as pastoral images suggest. Brin says: “When you see how these cows are treated, it’s certainly something I’m not comfortable with.”
Google continues to invest in renewable energy to power its huge data centers, and the company’s co-founder says cultured beef is a great way to add to that system by reduce land, water, and food consumption.
Sergey Brin gave an undisclosed amount of money to Dr. Mark Post, professor of Vascular Physiology and head of the Physiology department at Maastricht University, so he could create the world’s first cultured beef burger.
The project took just over three months to grow and compress 20,000 muscle fibers from cows’ stem cells. Ultimately, a low-fat burger was created.
Eventually, cultured burger beef will contain a higher level of fat, which will give it a more natural burger taste.
The $330,000 cultured beef burger was cooked up in London on Monday afternoon.
