One of the most unbelievable weeks in Wimbledon’s history has come to an end on Saturday.
Last week at this time, everyone was anticipating having the top seeds Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer making a run for another championship at the All England Club, but it was not to be.
Monday saw Nadal losing on the first round in one of the biggest upsets ever at the tournament. But we were not done with surprises for the week. Wednesday saw the exit of Federer as well as Maria Sharapova in two more shocking results.
The fact that all these top players lost to much lower ranked ones is even more shocking. It goes to prove, even the great ones have bad days when playing at Wimbledon.
On the last day of play for the week, Saturday, Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic advanced to the fourth round with ease.
Andy Murray, the local favorite is still in the run as well and has seen his chances of winning at home for the first time in his career increase ten fold.
With Nadal and Federer gone , Murray is a strong contender to take it all, but he still needs to get past Djokovic who is always strong on grass.
Serena Williams has had no major problems in her matches and appears to be a sure contender for the finals. She prevailed over Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-2, 6-0 in just over a hour.
Djokovic, who is the No. 1 seed, did easy work of Jeremy Chardy of France, beating him 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 to move on.
Because of bad weather which forced play to be cancelled on Friday, organizers were scrambling with the additional matches on Saturday.
Some players have complained of less than ideal court conditions for a high number of injuries that have forced at least 10 players to withdraw so far.
Will we see a more normal week at Wimbledon starting on Monday?
