A graphic video that came out last week showing a CHP officer brutally beating a woman on the side of a California highway is under investigation by the department’s internal unit, and as it stands, the California Highway Patrol is saying that it does not need any outside help with its current investigation.
A driver passing by last Tuesday during afternoon rush hour recorded the video. The woman in the video identified as 51-year-old grandmother Marlene Pinnock, is seen being pulled to the ground and pummeled by an unidentified California Highway Patrol officer , according to CBS News.
Pinnock’s attorney, Caree Harper, told reporters that, “The focal point of what she did on the freeway is simple,” in response to questions about her client’s reason for being on the highway. “She got beat, savagely beat by someone who seemed to be trying out for mixed martial arts. And it’s unacceptable.”
The official police report indicated that Pinnock became “physically combative,” forcing the officer to “place the pedestrian under arrest” with the help of another officer. The report also read that Pinnock did not complain of any injuries, but her attorney says otherwise.
“She has suffered multiple injuries. She is having to press ice compacts repeatedly on her body, face, arms, [and] shoulders.”
Currently the 51-year-old grandmother is being held involuntary in a medical facility under a psychiatric hold.
Although some community activists are calling for a federal investigation, CHP’s Assistant Chief, Chris O’Quinn told reporters Sunday that, “Our internal investigation process is very, very detailed and thorough and it has credibility throughout the country.”
The officer involved in the incident is currently on administrative duty while the department investigates.
