Olsen Twins Earned Their Fashion Chops On ‘Full House’

The Olsen Twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, earned their acting chops by starring on the hit TV series Full House. The girls recently sat down for an interview with The Edit magazine where they talked about getting their fashion start at just 9-months-old thanks to that popular family show.

Ashley Olsen explains, “[On Full House] we would be in six-hour fittings three times a week, because we had to wear 12 different outfits.” While Mary-Kate added, “We were designing clothes for ourselves as we were so petite. So I think that is when we became obsessed with fit, and now the obsession has become a profession.”

That earlier exposure to fashion led the girls to create the very popular lines The Row and Elizabeth and James along with discount lines Olsenboye and StyleMint.

In 2012 the Olsen twins took home the highly coveted Womenswear Designers of the Year award at the CFDA Awards. That award was given to their current focus on the high fashion line The Row.

At 27-years-old the girls have been famous their entire lives. In their interview the girls say they are used to shutterbugs snapping constant photos of them in public.

“There is a threshold in New York, and once you pass that and are considered a New Yorker, they leave you alone. But we’re at the office every day, then home or out for dinner, so there aren’t the opportunities for them to take pictures. For the most part you try and avoid it…[I do], at least.”

The girls may attempt to stay out of the limelight but Ashley explains that fame has always been “part of our lives” and “There wasn’t any weirdness where we decided that we wanted to be famous. Then as we got older, we were very fortunate that we could hire and work with amazing people who want to protect us.”

From Full House to a billion dollar empire, the Olsen twins definitely turned their first co-starring gig into a great opportunity. An opportunity that allows them to sell $55,000 handbags.
