Madeleine McCann vanished from a Portugal resort in May 2007. UK police have now identified a new suspect. The man was reportedly seen carrying a child matching Madeleine’s description on the night of her disappearance.
Witnesses said the man was carrying the child away from the McCann’s vacation suite, heading toward the beach. The child was reportedly between the ages of three and four. Several witnesses report the child had blonde hair and was wearing pajamas.
As reported by BBC, the suspect is described as a white male between 20 and 40 years old. Witnesses said he is of medium height and build. On the night in question he was clean-shaven and his brown hair was cut short.
Detective Chief Inspector Redwood said the child was not crying or struggling with the man. Detective simply want to question the man about his behavior on the evening of May 7, 2007.
The man was sighted at around 10 pm, which fits the revised timeline. As reported by Sky News, the new timeline “has given new significance to sightings and movements of people in and around” the resort.
Police determined that Madeleine McCann vanished between 8:30 and 10 pm. She and her siblings were asleep in the vacation suite, while her parents dined in the resort’s tapas restaurant.
Kate McCann checked on the children and 10 pm and found her 3-year-old daughter missing.
The McCanns have faced stark criticism for their decision to leave their children alone while they dined. The parents defended their actions, explaining that they did not want to leave their children with strangers. The dining area was approximately 300 feet from the McCann’s suite, allowing the parents to keep an eye on the entrance.
Detective Redwood said the new timeline has allowed authorities to “make massive steps forward” in their investigation. As resort guests travel from many countries, appeals for information are being extended to Germany, Ireland, and the Netherlands.
Madeleine McCann has been missing for six years. However, detectives and her family are not willing to give up.
