Miriam Carey, Woman In D.C. Chase, Thought Obama Was Stalking Her [Report]

A possible motive for Miriam Carey, the woman who led authorities on a chase from the White House to the Capitol before she was shot and killed by police, may have been uncovered. In addition to previous reports that she was possibly suffering from depression, authorities are now saying that she may have felt that President Barack Obama was stalking her.

Law enforcement authorities said that Carey, a dental hygienist living in Stamford, Connecticut, had a history of mental health problems. Dr. Barry Weiss, a former employer of Carey’s, told NBC Connecticut that she was increasingly stressed after an unplanned pregnancy in January 2012. He ultimately fired her in August due to patient complaints that she was too rough.

Relatives believe that she suffered from postpartum depression.

The chase, which took place Thursday afternoon, was initially reported as a shooting. The capital immediately went on lockdown, and members of the House and Senate were interrupted and secured by authorities.

Carey, 34, struck a security fence outside of the White House with her black Infiniti sedan just after 2:00 PM ET. She then hit a Secret Service agent with her car, and sped off toward the Capitol building at speeds of 80 mph.

Police and Secret Service stopped her at the Capitol building, and she attempted escape. Police shot at her, and she died shortly thereafter.

She had an 18-month-old in the vehicle with her, believed to be her own daughter. The child is unharmed and in the protection of social services.

Authorities did not disclose how they know Carey felt she was being stalked by President Obama or why. You can watch the harrowing, raw video of the chase below, or check out a detailed live-blog of the incident here.
