‘Star Wars’ TV Series Rumors Heat Up

Fans of the Star Wars series have spent many years wishing for a live action television series, but the project has never seen the light of day. Maybe now that J.J. Abrams has the franchise the rumors of a live action Star Wars show may actually become a reality. That’s at least what some people are hoping, especially after the success of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. over the last two weeks.

A source from Blue Sky Disney has reported that the idea of bringing Star Wars to television has been spinning over at Disney. While this idea is extreme early, a source said of the Star Wars TV plans, “right now it’s just batting ideas around and seeing which ones work and which ones they want to pitch to the network.”

Since ABC has their success with Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. we don’t see them taking on a similar series. One possible network that may be a good fit for the Star Wars TV series is NBC.The network in recent years has failed with unoriginal ideas, which has led to a ratings slump. Once upon a time NBC struck gold with the Tim Kring series Heroes, so a Star Wars project for NBC wouldn’t be too far-fetched.

However, with the cost of these big television shows a network like NBC may back away from an exciting new idea such as a Star Wars TV pilot. According to Rick McCallum of the il-fated Star Wars show, Star Wars: Underworld, back in the day he had “50 hours totally scripted” but the show never came to fruition because it was deemed as too expensive. An episode would have cost about $5 million dollars, which made it too costly for the network.

Still, a Star Wars TV show may just work in the climate we’re experiencing this season. What do you think?
