Oscar Pistorius Requests US Forensics Experts

Oscar Pistorius’ legal team hired US forensics experts to review his case. The former Olympian is accused of shooting and killing Reeva Steenkamp on February 14. The double-amputee contends the shooting was an accident.

The forensics experts traveled to South Africa to review the evidence and details of the case. Their opinion is expected to help attorneys with their defense strategy.

More than 100 witnesses and experts will testify on the state’s behalf. Prosecutors say Pistorius is guilty of premeditated murder. As reported by ABC News, the former athlete faces a minimum of 25 years in prison.

Oscar Pistorius admits he shot his girlfriend. However, he says he mistook her for an intruder. Steenkamp was shot three times through a door while inside the bathroom.

Neighbors report hearing Steenkamp scream before she was shot. Prosecutors say the neighbors’ statements prove Pistorius’ guilt.

Steenkamp’s death was investigated for nearly six months. Pistorius was indicted after authorities concluded the shooting was not accidental.

Defense attorneys are expected to argue that Pistorius was not wearing his prosthetic legs when he shot into the bathroom. They contend that if it was premeditated, he would have worn his artificial limbs.

Evidence will likely include the bathroom door, cell phone records, witness accounts, and expert testimony.

As reported by Fox News, the trial will begin on March 3. Although there are many witnesses, the trial is not expected to last more than two weeks.

Pistoruis is a well-respected athlete. After losing his legs at the age of 11, he went on to receive a medal at the 2011 World Championship in Athletics. He also participated in the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Steenkamp was a talented model and actress. She worked as a paralegal and hoped to obtain her law degree before she turned 30.

The tragic events of February 14 destroyed the lives of two very talented young people and their families. Oscar Pistorius’ role in Steenkamp’s death may never be fully known.
