Anthony Bourdain Apologizes To Frito Pie [Video]

Food expert Anthony Bourdain may be opinionated when it comes to things like Frito Pie, but he’s also able to admit when he’s wrong about the same sorts of snap culinary judgments.

And while Anthony Bourdain has sampled all manner of horrifying eats on his show and while traveling the world, the bad boy chef had some particularly harsh and unflattering words for Frito Pie, a southwest speciality that is just like it sounds — a casserole of sorts, made with chili and Fritos.

Bourdain came across Frito Pie in his travels, and had some not-so-flattering words for the “delicacy” upon his review and assessment. Apparently, the Food TV star was in New Mexico where, also apparently, Frito Pie is a big thing — like bagels in New York, or pizza in New York, or Chinese food, also in New York.

And while filming Parts Unknown, Bourdain discussed Frito Pie — which I know for a fact was at least at one time available at New York City’s Cowgirl Hall of Fame.

Anthony said some nice things about New Mexico style eating, but not the Frito Pie, and he mused:

“New Mexico, you have many wonderful things… I think, let Texas have this one.”

Comparing the dish to “warm crap in a bag,” and a “colostomy pie,” Bourdain also accused the food of being based in canned Hormel Chili. Five & Dime owner Mike Collins objected to that particular claim, and he seems to deny using Hormel when he says:

“I don’t have any idea where he got that from. I mean, if we’re using canned Hormel Chili then I’d like to buy stock in that because what we have is good.”

But Bourdain himself set the record straight, correcting the idea he disliked New Mexico’s Frito Pie. He cops to the poetic descriptions, but adds:

“Contrary to the impression left by some reports of the show, I, in fact, very much enjoyed my Frito pie in spite of its disturbing weight in the hand. It may have felt like [expletive] but was shockingly tasty.”

Do you think Anthony Bourdain is too hard on American trash cuisine like Frito Pie?
