Man’s Dead Grandma Lives On In Google Street View

Technology poses all sorts of new and strange dilemmas and scenarios for grief and grieving, and the appearance of a man’s dead grandmother on Google street view is one such situation.

Dustin Moore lives in Portland, and he admits on Reddit that when he’s bored, he clicks around on Google Maps to spy on the ‘hood. His brother has the same habit, and Moore told Redditors that he’d experienced a strange new interaction with his deceased grandma through the technology.

Over on Reddit, Moore explains that for him, the image wasn’t sad or depressing, surprising as it was. The young man says his Grandma Alice died less than a year after the pic was taken, and he explains:

“Normally when I am bored I like to browse the google street views around Oregon. Well recently I was contacted by my younger brother who happen to be doing the same thing last night. While he was checking out a few places, he happen to look at my grandmas house. Its really rare you ever see someone you know captured in the google camera. But, there was my grandma sitting on her front porch reading her news paper enjoying life.”

Moore adds:

“I thought it was such an uplifting and awesome picture because it showed just how laid back and awesome she was. Might not mean much to anyone else, I just thought I would share.”

While seeing your dead grandma on Google Maps could be sad for some, the experience has really comforted Moore in his lingering grief — he spoke to KATU about the experience and the interaction with Reddit and says:

“All of a sudden there was a bunch of comments like, ‘Oh, I recognize that. Your grandma’s awesome.’ I didn’t really expect people to respond in that way – in the same way that I did.”

While Moore can “visit” his dead grandma’s Google Maps “memorial,” the image will change eventually, he laments. However, he’s got about six or seven years before the pic is updated.
