Evelyn Lowery Dies At Age 88


Evelyn Lowery has died at the age of 88. She was the wife of civil rights icon Reverend Joseph Lowery. On September 18, Evelyn suffered irreversible damage from a massive stroke.

She was released from the hospital on Wednesday evening. Hours later, she passed away at home surrounded by her family.

Reverend Joseph Lowery says his wife lived her life to serve others. Evelyn founded the SCLC/Women’s Organizational Movement for Equality Now Incorporated. She worked tirelessly, promoting the empowerment of women and girls.

Evelyn Lowery drew inspiration from her parents, who were also activists. She and her husband worked together to promote the American Civil Rights Movement. She participated in numerous “Bloody Sunday” marches from Selma to Montgomery.

As reported by CBS News, Martin Luther King Jr. was one of Evelyn’s most beloved heroes. She marched with the leader numerous times. Evelyn created the Drum Major of Justice Award to honor King’s work.

Each year, the award is given to a recipient who “demonstrates an exemplary passion for human rights.”

Evelyn’s civil rights work transcended lines of race, religion, age, and gender. She simply wanted everyone to have equal rights. Through the years, she was honored with numerous awards.

She received the YWCA Academy of Women Achievers Award, The Rosa Parks award, and the APEX Museum Tribute Award. Evelyn was also named “one of the 100 most influential women in Atlanta.”

As reported by Legacy, Reverend Joseph Lowery released a statement about his beloved wife:

“She was a wonderful mother and wife… I thank God that she didn’t suffer any pain… I was blessed having her as my partner… for close to 70 years… as a man of faith, I know that she is with her God.”

Evelyn Lowery will always be remembered for blazing a path for women’s rights. Her work will remain her legacy.
