Forehead Nose: Flap Reconstruction Technique In China Forms New Nose On Man

This headline needs some explaining and you may need to suspend belief for this story!

The MailOnline recently carried a report about a 22-year-old Chinese man who has had a new nose temporarily grafted onto his forehead..

The full story is that the man, who has been named as Xiaolian, had to have a temporary replacement for his original nose which was infected and deformed. The procedure was carried out at a hospital in Fuzhou, Fujian province.

He damaged his nose in a traffic accident in August 2012 but simply did not attempt to seek any form of medical treatment. Consequently, an infection developed which corroded the cartilage so badly that the surgeons were unable to repair it.

They were left with no alternative but to grow him a new nose and then to transplant it in place of his damaged one. However, for technical reasons the transfer could not be carried out immediately. Consequently they had to create the new nose by placing a skin tissue expander onto Xiaolian’s forehead.

This was then formed into the shape of a nose and was supported by cartilage taken from the man’s ribs. The Surgeons say that they are satisfied with the way the new nose has developed and that they plan to carry out the transplant surgery in the near future.

Photos of the man with a nose appearing to grow out of his forehead have gone viral on the internet.

Now, it will be difficult to use the phrase “nose job” without forming a mental picture of this “forehead Nose!”
