NY Mall Shooting Suspect Sang Ho Kim Remains At Large As Local Lockdowns Lifted

The suspect in the NY mall shooting, identified by authorities as Sang Ho Kim, continues to elude capture, but authorities believe he “is not in the immediate area” and local schools have been taken off lockdown.

According to reports, Kim, described as a “disgruntled vendor,” entered the Savenergy location near the Roosevelt Field Mall in East Garden City shortly after 10 am Wednesday and opened fire, wounding CEO John Choi and killing another employee. While Kim is considered armed and dangerous, police do not believe the act of violence to be random; instead, it is believed his wrath was directed solely at that particular business.

“The motive here appears to be a work-related motive,” said Nassau County Police Chief Steven Skrynecki. “There was some disgruntlement between him and the company he was attacking. We have nothing to suggest that this individual is on a random, shooting rampage.”

“This individual came here to confront these two individuals who work in this facility. This was not a random act, and then fled the scene,” Nassau County Police Detective Michael Bitsko said.

Area public schools were placed on lockdown in light of their proximity to the NY mall shooting, as were Hofstra University and Nassau County Community College. After conducting a building-by-building search, police determined Kim was not in the immediate area and lifted the lockdowns.

Authorities describe the alleged shooter as Asian, ranging between 6 and 6-foot-2 in height and wearing a red shirt and possibly a brown jacket. Kim is said to have fled the scene in a white Honda Pilot with New York license plate FMA-3648.

CBS reports that a $5,000 reward is being offered for information related to the case; individuals are encouraged to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.
