Carey Lowell Reportedly Wanted Different Lifestyle Than Richard Gere

Carey Lowell wanted to enjoy a high-society lifestyle in the Hamptons, socializing and taking in parties at Jimmy Buffet’s house next door.

Richard Gere wanted a more quiet existence, practicing Buddhism and working on social causes.

In the end, the differing views were too much for the couple, who have separated and are planning to divorce.

“They have a place in Bedford [New York], and he likes it because it’s quiet and he likes the solitude,” an insider told the New York Post’s Page Six. “She likes being in North Haven in the limelight. They live next door to Jimmy Buffett and his family, and they’re good friends.”

Gere and Lowell have been married for the last 11 years, but sources say they have drifted apart greatly in recent months. The two have only been seen together in public a handful of times in the last year, and not since the Golden Globe Awards in January.

Though Gere may have been the bigger name in the couple, Carey Lowell is a fairly high-profile celebrity in her own right. The 52-year-old actress appeared as a Bond girl in License to Kill opposite Timothy Dalton, and has played Assistant District Attorney Jamie Ross on Law & Order.

Before acting, Lowell caught her big break as a model, appearing in campaigns for Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein.

Carey Lowell and Richard Gere may not have an easy divorce ahead of them. The couple has a son together, Homer, and an extensive amount of property to divvy up. They have a 12,000-square-foot home in North Haven that they put up for sale in July for $65 million. Gere also owns the Bedford Post Inn, which he had restored.

Sources say it’s unclear when Carey Lowell and Richard Gere will actually file for divorce.
