Antonio Banderas is slated to star as a pirate in the new SpongeBob Squarepants 2 movie, which is being filmed in Savannah in the coming weeks.
Information is a bit thin on the ground at the moment, but it has been confirmed that Banderas will play a pirate in the new movie. What we do know is that filming will commence on September 30 on Tybee Island and also in Savannah on October 9.
A recent casting call that was sent out in the local area for extras asked people to shave their faces if they want to be part of the pirate crew. Webpronews reports that it is thought that this is so Antonio Banderas will look extra mean, in contrast, with his beard.
The SpongeBob sequel is expected to be action packed and the action scenes will reportedly take a number of weeks to film. Furthermore, a little known fact about Tybee island: In the 1950’s, the US government dropped a nuclear bomb on the island. It didn’t detonate but also has never been found.
This won’t be the first time Banderas takes on a role in a children’s movie. He also worked as the voice of Puss in Boots in the Shrek movies, as well as El Mariachi in Desperado.
The makers of the film hope that the SpongeBob sequel will be the roaring success that the first SpongeBob movie was. Released in 2004, it grossed just under $150 million. There is no confirmed release date for the film, but rumors have it that it will hit the big screen early on in 2015.
