Josh McDaniels lands with the St. Louis Rams

The St. Louis Rams have hired former Denver Broncos Head Coach Josh McDaniels to be their new offensive coordinator. While I thought that McDaniels would get a coordinator job, I don’t think this is a good move. Sam Bradford has a lot of skill in a conventional NFL offense, McDaniels is anything but conventional and I see this offense and Bradford taking a big step back in 2011. I would have liked to see the Rams hire a guy who would have largely kept the offensive scheme in tact; now Bradford is likely starting over at square one.

Granted McDaniels got a lot of Kyle Orton in Denver, and St. Louis Rams fans have got to be hoping that he can work his magic on Bradford. I think this move likely means that the Rams will be using the 14th overall pick on a Wide Out to help them stretch the field. However after so many Denver Broncos jumped ship when he was hired there, I wonder what the Rams offense will look like in 2011.

It is not that I doubt McDaniels’ skills with a NFL offense; I just do not want to see their very young talented QB get lost trying to learn a new system. The Detroit Lions did this once and the outcome was tragic. McDaniels is going to have to bend to the Rams, as much as they must bend to him for this to work.

Maybe I am wrong, and McDaniels learned a valuable lesson in Denver and will tame his ways, but this is the guy who got caught taping an opponent and ran a bunch of very talented folks away from the Broncos.
