JJ Abrams Says ‘Star Wars’ Will Be ‘Authentic And Emotional’

JJ Abrams has been talking about his work on the upcoming Star Wars movies, remarking that he aims to make them “emotional and authentic.”

Abrams is set to start shooting the the seventh instalment of the Star Wars franchise in the first few weeks of 2014, however there is still very little known about the project, as the cast has still yet to be announced and there are no plot details yet. All that is known is Michael Arndt, who wrote Toy Story 3, has written the film.

Entertainment Weekly asked the director which previous Star Wars films have influenced his movie spiritually or tonally.

Abrams responded, “Impossible for me to say because it’s going to be an evolving thing. I would say we are working really hard to make a movie that feels as emotional and authentic and exciting as possible. Whatever your favourite Star Wars movie is and how to compare it is really sort of subjective.”

He then added that he wants to make sure that the film is “real” and that this is incredibly important to him.

Abrams continued, “I remember reading a thing somewhere, someone wrote about just wanting [Episode VII] to feel real; to feel authentic. I remember I felt that way when I was 11 years old when I saw the first one. As much of a fairytale as it was, it felt real. And to me, that is exactly right.”

During the interview, Abrams failed to confirm whether or not Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher will return to the series, or if Benedict Cumberbatch, who has been consistently linked to the movie, will join them.

Previously, Hamill stated that he had told Abrams during a creative meeting about the new movies, “We’ve got to find a proper balance between CGI and old-school models.”
