Jon Jones Says Daniel Cormier ‘Definitely Won’t Be Getting A Title Fight’

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones said heavyweight contender Daniel Cormier “definitely won’t be getting a title shot” against him.

Jones is one day away from defending his title for the sixth time. If he beats Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 Saturday night, he’ll break Tito Ortiz’s record for most title defenses. He’ll also extend the longest win streak in UFC light heavyweight history to 10 victories.

The 26-year-old, who became the youngest champion in UFC history in March 2011, appeared on The Jim Rome Show Wednesday to talk about his upcoming fight. When asked what problems he thought Gustafsson would bring during the match, Jones said “really nothing.”

Jones also said he thinks Glover Teixeira will be his next opponent if he beats Gustafsson. Teixeira is coming off of a knockout victory over Ryan Bader at UFC Fight Night 28. If he doesn’t fight the Brazilian, Jones said there was the possibility of “some interesting superfights for the fans.”

The next name thrown out was former Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix winner Daniel Cormier, who plans to move down to 205 after his fight against Roy Nelson at UFC 166 next month. But Jones didn’t think the fight would come to fruition.

“As far as Daniel Cormier, he definitely won’t be getting a title fight,” Jones said. “I don’t think I would accept a fight against him. He’s a guy I don’t respect at all, and I would definitely make sure he loses the weight, makes 205 and earns himself a title shot.”

Last month, Daniel Cormier said he would face “petty” Jon Jones at some point. Jones said the former Olympian wasn’t relevant to him, and that he wasn’t even in the top 5. He also said that he didn’t think Cormier had 20,000 followers on Twitter, which we all know is the gold standard as far as judging fighter ranking.

Cormier said followers don’t come into play in an actual fight, and that he planned on challenging the champion to a fight if he made the weight cut.

“It’s almost shocking that someone in his position could be so petty,” said Cormier. “It was almost like, wow, we’re adults.”

Cormier added, “The truth is we’re going to fight at some point. We have fights to get through first. Then all those things are going to have to be answered.”
