Big Brother Contestant Andy Herren Sorry For How He Acted On The Show

Andy Herren won Big Brother, but leaving the locked-down house hasn’t exactly been a celebration for the 26-year-old Illinois man.

Though Andy dominated competitions and snowed other houseguests into keeping him safe, he also participated in some of the nastiness that made this season one of the most controversial in the show’s history. Andy may not have displayed the sexist or racist behavior of other contestants, but he did show a vindictive streak and make threats against contestant Elissa Slater.

Big Brother viewers watched Andy insult Elissa behind her back, making fun of her looks and even her children. At one point he even threatened to punch her in the face.

He picked a difficult target — Elissa was one of the most popular players with viewers and won a fan-voted America’s Choice prize of $25,000 — and upon leaving the house faced questions of his behavior.

The comments also prompted his former employer the College Of DuPage to clarify that he did not represent the institution.

Upon leaving the house, Andy has apologized for his behavior.

“I’m going to say it right now: I already feel terrible about my Elissa comments. To anyone I offended, especially Elissa, I am sorry,” he wrote on Twitter.

But Andy was also the target of some hatred, including homophobic comments (Andy is the show’s first gay winner).

“Those kind of comments are nothing I condone. It hurts me they were said,” Herren said. “It makes me sad to be associated with a season of Big Brother like I did.”

Andy Herren said he informed the College of DuPage that he would not be returning in the fall due to his participation on Big Brother, but hopes now the college will take him back.

“I’d love to be back there come January,” Herren said. “… I hope being on the show doesn’t jeopardize that.”

Whatever happens to his job, Andy Herren will still have his $500,000 Big Brother winnings.
