The Cleveland Browns fire Eric Mangini

After two 5-11 seasons Eric Mangini is out as Head Coach of the Cleveland Browns. Not enough progress was made, but that is also because of the state of the Browns roster as much as it is a failure of coaching. Really I think Mangini is out because he was not hired by Mike Holmgren, and he would like his own guy in this key position. For now Mike has said he does not want this job, and I believe him. I think that a Holmgren crony is going to get this job at the guy at the top of my list is Jon Gruden.

Gruden is a heck of a coach, and I think he would do well working for his former head coach Holmgren. The Browns job is actually kind of attractive as they seem to have their young QB, Colt McCoy, in place. They have Peyton Hillis, and they have Joshua Cribbs. Add a deep threat of a receiver and the offense could be very good, very quickly. Of course the Browns would have to use draft picks and free agency to add some talent on their O line for that to happen.

The Browns defense also has a lot of potential with Joe Haden and TJ Ward already in place. Again the weakness of the defense seems to be on the D line, and that can be helped in the draft or free agency. The Browns were 22nd in yards allowed per game with 350.1. They were 18th in the NFL in passing yards per game with 220. They were 27th in rushing defense giving up 129 rushing yards per game.

That tells me this team needs some help n the D line, and in the LB corps. However adding talent to an already talented roster is always good, and it seems hat the Browns could be a fairly good team sooner rather than later. I have no idea who they will eventually hire, but Jon Gruden and Marty Mornhinweg have to be considered the favorites.
