Is Gary Kubiak safe?

I personally have Houston Texans’ head coach Gary Kubiak on the endangered species list, but I found an interesting rumor about him online today. The Texans offense is still pretty good, but much like his old boss Mike Shanahan it does not seem that Kubiak is the man to make the Texans defense all that it should be. If the front office were to find a strong defensive coordinator, it may chose to keep Kubiak around to keep the continuity on the offense going.

The name mentioned in the rumor was Wade Phillips. Sure Phillips was a complete disaster as a head coach, but he is a superior defensive coordinator and could help Kubiak not only keep his job, but turn the Texans defense into an elite unit. Sure right now the defense is awful and will need draft picks to help it out, but this doesn’t sound like that crazy of a plan.

When a team fires a head coach is always has to start over, and that rarely means success in the short term. I live in Detroit and I have seen a good number of coaches come and go and the chaos that remains after the heed man leaves is always worse than the reasons the head man left. The Texans are a team looking to move forward, not regress.

With that in mind, the Texans front office should do whatever necessary to keep the offense producing at a high level and improve the defense. Hiring Phillips to be the D coordinator could be a way to do just that.
