‘Fifty Shades’ Cast: Melanie Griffith Is One ‘Proud Mama’

It’s not the stuff of rumors any more. Fifty Shades of Grey has officially been cast with Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson in the lead roles.

Johnson’s mother, Melanie Griffith, couldn’t be happier about the news. “My beautiful child Dakota has been chosen to play Anna Steele in 50 Shades. Look out world! Here she comes!!! #proudmama,” she wrote on Twitter after the announcement Monday.

E.L. James, who authored the book series that the upcoming film is based on, personally shared the casting news on Monday via her Twitter account. Charlie Hunnam, best known for Sons of Anarchy and Pacific Rim will portray Christian Grey, while Johnson will play opposite him as Anastasia Steele.

Online reception to the casting of Hunnam and Johnson has been mixed, with some Twitter users disappointed to the point of tears.

Slightly more honest Twitter users simply admitted that they don’t know who Hunnam and Johnson are. Hunnam, like we said above, is best known for the FX biker dramaSons of Anarchy. If you don’t know about the show, it’s really your tragic loss.

Johnson is slightly less well-known. The daughter of Melanie Griffith and actor Don Johnson, Dakota had a lead role in the short-lived Fox sitcom Ben & Kate, and has made supporting appearances in several films including 2010’s The Social Network.

If you’re still worried about the casting, the film’s producer, Michael De Luca, suggested that you should wait until the film comes out before you make final judgments. He said that casting the two leads was simple because there’s an “incredible chemistry” between them.

“Auditions were stunning,” he said.

Who do you think should have been cast as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in the Fifty Shades of Grey film?
