Vin Diesel Originally Met With Marvel About A New Movie

Vin Diesel recently revealed that originally Marvel wanted him to star in a new movie. However, this year’s Comic-Con ultimately derailed those plans.

The Fast and Furious 6 star got internet tongues wagging this summer after announcing that he was taking a meet with the folks at Marvel. As soon as the post hit Facebook, many fans wondered what project would bear the busy actor’s name.

Although Vin Diesel would later land the role of Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy, the actor told The Hollywood Reporter that this wasn’t Marvel’s original idea. According to him, the studio originally had a different movie in mind.

“That was the focus of our conversation — a fresh [intellectual property] that would come out in 2016 or 2017, and potentially launch the third phase,” Diesel said.

The Riddick star stopped short of revealing which property Marvel was interested in developing. While the actor and the studio were excited about working together, this year’s San Diego Comic-Con forced both parties to rethink the idea.

Since fans seemed eager to see Diesel and Marvel join forces as soon as humanly possible, the actor was eventually tapped to bring Groot to life. The actor said his busy schedule prevented him from tackling anything substantial.

“I guess after they watched Iron Giant, or whatever, they came up with this idea of taking the strangest Marvel character — or the strangest Marvel character that’s ever hit film — and thought what I could do with that with motion capture and with my voice,” he explained.

Diesel definitely has his hands full at the moment. Not only is he starring in director David Twohy’s Riddick, he’s also attached to Soldiers of the Sun, Fast and Furious 7, and the proposed Kojak flick.

Are you disappointed that Vin Diesel won’t star in a new movie for Marvel? What project do you think the actor and the studio were discussing?
