Miley Cyrus’ MTV VMAs Performance Looked ‘Desperate,’ Says Former TV Mom

Miley Cyrus’ MTV VMAs performance is the biggest thing buzzing this morning with even her TV mom Brooke Shields sounding off on the 20-year-old’s controversial performance.

Shields made a handful of guest appearances on Hannah Montana back in the day as Cyrus’ character’s mom.

This week, the 48-year-old actress joined the Today Show as a guest co-anchor on Monday, and given the connection plus Cyrus’ Sunday night’s performance, they had plenty to talk about.

“I was Hannah Montana’s mother!” she joked to Willie Geist. “Where did I go wrong?”

But in all seriousness: “I just want to know who’s advising her, and why (the VMA display) is necessary…. (Our children) can’t watch that…. I feel like it’s a bit desperate.”

And sure, other artists are edgy all the time. But Shields says people that artists like Lady Gaga have “a genius behind all of it; it’s not just display,” something that doesn’t seem to apply to her former TV daughter.

Shields, who also dealt with a difficult child star transition period herself, said that she thinks Miley Cyrus’ MTV VMAs performance is an attempt to distance herself from the Hannah Montana days. Dramatic and excessive, perhaps, but Shields seems to get the motive behind it.

“You could see her trying so hard to go against that,” said Shields. “She can sing beautifully, and I feel like if she lets that lead, rather than let her bottom lead…. (She’s) trying so, so hard.”

Still, Shields had to applaud Cyrus for being bold. “She went for it,” Shields admitted. “You’ve got to give her some credit. We’re all talking about her.”
