Deion Sanders Jr. might be in a bit of trouble with the NCAA after pictures emerged showing him and some Southern Methodist University teammates partying backstage with Lil’ Wayne.
The pictures showed up on some social media sites last week, showing the SMU wide receiver and some of his teammates hanging out with rapper Lil’ Wayne. Deion Sanders Sr. has said that his son is now under investigation with claims that he got the backstage passes as a perk for being an SMU player.
Sanders Sr. is no stranger to NCAA problems. After a harmless meeting with receiver Dez Bryant, the NCAA suspended the star wide receiver for an entire season.
But Deion Sr. says there’s a good explanation for why his son was so cozy with Lil’ Wayne. The elder Deion said the two are good friends.
The claim seems believable enough. Deion is still well-connected in entertainment circles and even had a fledgling rap career himself.
At the same time, SMU has contradicted claims that the NCAA Is investigating Deion Sanders Jr. University official Brad Sutton said the investigation actually came from SMU itself.
“It’s not the NCAA. It’s our compliance office. Just doing their due diligence,” he said via text message. “We don’t expect to find anything amiss, but it’s our responsibility to check stuff like this out.”
Deion Sanders Jr. enrolled at SMU in January after a season with Atlanta Sports Academy, a highly regarded prep school. Though he played quarterback in high school, the 5-foot-8 Sanders is expected to see time as a slot receiver for SMU. There have also been reports that the coaching staff is looking into training him at defensive back, which may be more fitting given his stature.
Much like his boisterous father, Deion Sanders Jr. has done a lot to draw attention to himself in his short time at SMU. Earlier this year he tweeted pictures of the gold Versace sheets that he has in his dorm room.
