New South Korean Plastic Surgery Trend Gives You Garish ‘Joker’ Smile [Video]

South Korea, the world leader per-capita in plastic surgery, has struck again with a bizarre new trend: The “smile lipt.”

A photo of the procedure was posted to reddit this week, with a description claiming that the unidentified girl pictured had undergone a “new plastic surgery in Asia that curls the corners of your lips.”

It is unknown whether the photo is authentic, but the surgery definitely is.

Business Insider reports that an AONE clinic in South Korea performs the procedure, which is called a “smile lipt,” that last word being a ridiculous combination of the words “lip” and “lift.”

Dr. Kwon Taek Keun, the clinic’s founder, talked about the procedure in 2012 at a plastic surgeon’s convention. On the conference’s website, he described the results of the procedure:

“Mouth corners lift up very naturally after surgery, and although mouth corners stay upturned on an impassive face, they lift up even more distinctively during a smile.”

You can watch a “before / after” video of the procedure below. Blech.

Anyway, like we said, South Korea is known for plastic surgery, with 20 percent of South Korean women having gone under the knife according to some estimates. Eyelid and nose surgeries are common, but the bizarre and even dangerous plastic surgeries are growing in popularity.

For example, the “double jaw surgery” is supposed to create a V-shaped chin and jawline, but leaves half of the patients who get it unable to chew and swallow.

What do you think of South Korea’s bizarre “smile lipt” plastic surgery trend?
