Decatur School Shooting: Suspect In Custody After Reported Shooting In Georgia

A school shooting has taken place at an elementary school in Decatur, Georgia, and reports say a gunman is in custody and no children have been harmed.

The shooting took place at Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy, a charter school near Atlanta. The school’s board chair, Melvin Johnson, told CNN affiliate WSB that there have been no reports of injuries from the shooting.

Live footage from the Decatur school shooting showed school children being ushered away from the building quickly and taken to the far corner of a nearby field. They were also taken to a nearby Walmart parking lot, reports said.

Police have begun using the Walmart parking lot as a staging area for parents to pick up their children.

As children were being escorted out of the school, police searched the halls for possible additional suspects.

Witnesses said they heard up to 30 shots being fired near the school, local radio affiliate WSB reported.

School officials confirmed reports that no students have been injured.

CNN has also reported that police have a suspect in custody in the Decatur school shooting, but police have not released any more details about the incident. A news conference is scheduled for later in the afternoon on Tuesday.
