Sky News Cameraman Mick Deane Killed In Egypt


Sky News cameraman Mick Deane was killed this morning in Egypt.

Sky News reports that Deane had been part of the news team covering the violence in Cairo. He was shot and killed this morning. The rest of the team was not injured.

The Associated Press notes that Dean, 61, was covering the protests this morning when he was shot. Dean was treated for his injuries but died soon after. Dean leaves behind a wife and two children.

Sky news chief John Ryley said: “(Dean) the very best of cameramen, a brilliant journalist and an inspiring mentor to many at Sky.”

Mick Deane was part of the Sky News crew for the last 15 years. He was initially based in Washington, then Jerusalem, and recently moved down to Cairo to help cover the conflict in Egypt.

Sky’s Foreign Affairs Editor Tim Marshall said: “(Mick Deane was) a friend, brave as a lion but what a heart… what a human being… Micky was humorous in a dry way, he was wise and when you’re on the road with small teams, people like that are diamonds to be with. Our hearts go out to his family. He died doing what he’d done so brilliantly for decades.”

Habiba Ahmed Abd Elaziz, a 26-year-old journalist for Gulf News, was also shot dead this morning in Cairo. Elaziz was not on assignment at the protest.
