Amanda Seyfried: ‘Lovelace’ Nude Scenes Made Me Feel Liberated

Amanda Seyfried had no problems appearing nude for her portrayal of a famous porn star in the upcoming movie Lovelace.

In fact, the actress who appeared as Linda Lovelace said filming naked scenes ended up making her feel liberated. Seyfriend said this is likely the result of her upbringing, in which she believed that nudity wasn’t a very big deal.

“It’s funny, because I felt liberated when I was doing it. I’m sure people that are very protective of me wouldn’t feel very comfortable with that, but it’s like, what’s the big deal?… Growing up I was made to feel nudity was wrong because everything was always censored in movies, and it was just like, why are we covering ourselves up?”

But the 27-year-old actress said not all of her experiences with nudity have been so liberating. While doing press for Lovelace, she told an interviewer how she discovered pornography at age 6, saying it was a jarring experience.

“It was a cop — a guy dressed in a cop costume, and it was a girl going down on him,” she recalled. “It was the first time I’d ever seen a penis, and I remember it being very graphic, and I remember when he came: it was so terrifying. It was funny. But it was also, like, so, so, so wrong. It was 1990 or 1991, and so AIDS was really rampant. Watching any kind of sexual acts when you’re a six-year-old would make you think you were going to contract AIDS somehow.”

Despite her open-minded attitude toward nudity, Amanda Seyfried admits she had a bit of nerves when the took the Lovelace role.

But as she began filming, the tension went away and she jumped into the role.

“It didn’t seem as scary as I thought it was [going to be],” Amanda Seyfried said. “It was astonishing how quickly I was able to jump in wholeheartedly.”
