Shaaliver Douse, 14: Shot By Rookie Cop, Compared To Trayvon Martin

Shaaliver Douse was shot and killed in the early hours of Sunday morning in the Bronx, by a police officer only one month out of Police Academy.

The incident occurred when two rookie foot patrol officers heard gunshots and rushed to see where they were coming from. What panned out was a chase between two youths who were heading east on East 151st. One of the youths was running down the road while the other ran after him brandishing a handgun.

The officers told the chaser to drop his weapon, but he refused and instead pointed the gun at officers. One of them shot him fatally, striking him in the lower left jaw.

Shaaliver Douse, the victim was a mere 14 years old and is one of the youngest victims to have been shot by police in New York.

The police said that Shaaliver was a member of the notorious Nine gang from East 169th street. He lived in a housing project and was known to the police for an incident that lead to a charge of attempted murder, on the young boy, for a shooting on a rival gang member back in May.

Shaaliver’s aunt, Quwana Barcene compared her nephew to Trayvon Martin, saying:

“Him, Trayvon Martin, it’s never going to end. A child. Fourteen years old. Fourteen years old. Gone. Shot in the head. By police.”

Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly offered condolences to Shaaliver’s parents at a news conference today: “Regardless of the circumstances. This is a crushing blow to any parent.” He went on though to say that the fatal shooting was justified. He showed the two videos where the victim can be seen clearly approaching a group of men, with what seemed to be a clear intention to shoot one of them. Shaaliver then raises his handgun and fires three times.

The second video shows Shaaliver’s target running down the street, as a shot from the victim’s gun rings past his ear and hits a wall. When the youth was ordered to drop his gun and refused, the police shot him. Kelly continued: “I think they did what we would expect officers of any experience level to do.”

Aunt Quwana made it clear to reporters that she does not agree with Commissioner Kelly’s take on the shooting: “This is unreal, how the police get away with murder. They get away with murder.”
