Hillary Clinton May Have John McCain’s Backing In 2016

Hillary Clinton could have an important backer in her 2016 bid for the presidency — former GOP candidate John McCain.

The candidate who lost to Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election said he would consider backing Hillary if it came down to a race against Kentucky Senator Rand Paul.

“It’s gonna be a tough choice,” McCain told the New Republic with a laugh. He added, Let me just clarify that. I think that Rand Paul represents a segment of the GOP, just like his father. And I think he is trying to expand that, intelligently, to make it larger.”

If John McCain does endorse Hillary Clinton in 2016 against Paul, it would not come as too big a surprise to followers of the Senate. McCain has clashed often with Paul, who advocates against US military intervention and has criticized national security efforts. That does not sit well with McCain, a Navy veteran and member of the Senate’s Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committee.

Hillary Clinton already appears well-stacked for a 2016 presidential run. This week she and President Obama met for a private lunch. In the second private meeting between the Obama and Clinton since she left her Secretary of State post, reporters speculated that the 2016 presidential race could be one of the topics.

Clinton has also topped early 2016 polls, beating GOP rising stars like Chris Christie, governor of New Jersey. She also has the strength of Bill Clinton’s fundraising resources. And to top it off, NBC has just announced that it will be making a miniseries based on Hillary Clinton‘s life.

Of course, all of this is moot if Hillary Clinton does not decide to run. While inside reports and all indications seem to point to another presidential run, Clinton has yet to officially announce her intentions.
