Colts’ McAfee found drunk near canal, arrested

Pat McAfee of the Indianapolis Colts was arrested early this morning after he was found soaking wet near an area canal.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police were called just before 5 am to respond to a report of a man swimming in the Central Canal in Broad Ripple. When they arrived, 23-year-old punter McAfee was found wet, shirtless and disoriented:

A 911 call was received about 4:45 a.m. this morning from a woman who said a wet, shirtless man tried to get into her car at a traffic signal at Broad Ripple Avenue, according to WTHR (Channel 13). The woman said he had “blond, shaggy hair wearing jeans,” and that he “looks like he’s freezing.”

“I think he’s out of it,” the caller told the dispatcher.

McAfee was unable or unwilling to tell police whether he had been in the canal before they arrived:

The former WVU punter said he “wasn’t sure” if he had been in the canal or not, but that he knew “it was raining.”

When asked how much he had to drink, McAfee responded, “a lot, because I’m drunk.”

The punter was arrested for public drunkenness after blowing 0.15 on a breathalyzer. The team’s president released a statement this morning about McAfee’s arrrest:

“We are aware that Pat McAfee was arrested this morning and charged with public intoxication. We are in the process of gathering the relevant facts. When that task is complete, we will deal immediately with the issue of club discipline. Until we complete that process, we will have no further comment.”

A spokesman for the police says McAfee never mentioned his celebrity status, and that he was “cooperative, but cold” with temperatures in the low 40s.
