Real Life Barbie Valeria Lukyanova Gets New, Weird Documentary [Video]

Known as a “real life Barbie,” Valeria Lukyanova has become a controversial YouTube celebrity for her over the top doll-like appearance — whether or not the act is enhanced digitally to gain views.

While the eternal debate over whether Mattel’s big seller harms girls rages, Valeria Lukyanova’s real life Barbie schtick looks like a worst-case scenario of the iconic doll’s influence.

Now Lukyanova’s real life Barbie act has managed to get weirder, with a VICE collaboration in which she takes on the persona of “Space Barbie,” and purports to have some supernatural “time traveling spiritual guru” talents.

None of that is made up. VICE explains that Valeria Lukyanova is different, and that “what most of the world doesn’t know is that Valeria is not a real girl at all, but a time-traveling spiritual guru whose purpose is to save the world from the clutches of superficiality and negative energy.”

The Daily Beast quotes the real life Barbie, or Space Barbie, or some woman in Russia with a strong delusion, as saying that her creepy appearance is going to expose many people to spiritual enlightenment because she isn’t ugly like other religious people:

“I am a lecturer on the subject of out-of-body travel… If a nun starts talking about spirituality, will anyone notice her? No, No one will.”

Valeria continues:

“But if a beautiful, inspiring young woman starts talking about it, many people will start thinking. So I use my appearance to promote my spiritual ideas. It works perfectly.”

The real life Barbie YouTube star also claims that she was validated in her kooky beliefs — by an actual psychiatrist:

“I [once] asked myself whether everything was alright with my head… One day I decided to visit a psychiatrist … He said that I was very lucky I ended up coming to him because if it was another doctor, I definitely would have been taken into a ‘special place.'”
