Is Packers GM Ted Thompson on the hot seat?

When a division rival pulls off a big move, that doesn’t cost so much, that could very well save their season the other competing teams in the division generally start taking stock of themselves. That is what is going on with the Green Bay Packers, after the Minnesota Vikings added the piece that could salvage an otherwise miserable season. The Packers have a big hole of their own that needs to be filled, but so far General Manager Ted Thompson has either been unable or unwilling to find a trade that would help the Green Bay running game.

Save me your comments that the Packers running attack looked good against the Detroit Lions, remembering that they are in fact he Lions. The running game of the Packers needs some attention. After losing Ryan Grant to injury for the year something has to happen here. The Packers rank 22nd in team rushing, and are averaging under 100 yards team rushing per game.

That is simply not going to get it done. In a week where Marshawn Lynch was traded and it is being reported the Packers were on that bidding, it seems that Thompson could have stepped up and landed a long term solution to he Grant problem. In the end the Seattle Seahawks got Lynch for a 2011 4th round draft pick, and a sixth round 2012 pick that could escalate into a fifth rounder. That is not a huge price to pay.

In the end not landing Lynch isn’t a killer, but having him to off set the Packers pass first offense surely would have helped. The knock on Thompson is while he has built a very solid franchise, he has failed to get that team over the top. We have to wonder if not getting Lynch is the move that may have done just that.
