Death of Joseph Gordon Levitt’s brother Dan may have been from overdose

Actor Joseph Gordon Levitt announced the death of his 36-year-old brother last night via Twitter, saying: “My super hero brother @burningdan 1974-2010. Celebrate his life here ~ because he’s fucking awesome.”

The elder Gordon Levitt, who was a fire eater and dancer that often collaborated with his brother on creative projects, died earlier this week in Los Angeles. E! spoke with Los Angeles County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter, who said that the death was originally reported as an overdose. The suspicion cannot be confirmed, however, until toxicology reports on the actor’s late brother come back:

“It was initially reported to us as a possible overdose,” says Winter. “There were two friends present and one of them also was taken to the hospital.”

Winter reveals that Dan was pronounced dead at the scene on Monday at 3:58 a.m. in Los Angeles.

Winter did not speculate upon what drugs Gordon Levitt was thought to be using, or whether the drugs were prescription or street drugs.
