Sony 4K Movie Downloads Arriving This Fall
In an effort to promote its new 4K resolution, Sony 4K movie downloads will be offered to customers starting this fall.
Company executives on Wednesday announced that various movies from Sony Pictures and other independent production houses would be offered at the time of launch.
Phil Molyneux, Sony’s chief operating officer, announced today that the Video Unlimited 4K program is expected to debut in early fall.
Until that time Sony, customers can only receive 4K content from Sony’s 4K media server. The current setup requires pre-loaded content delivery. New Sony 4K content must be added manually over a hard-wire connection.
According to Molyneux:
“We will be first in the world with a native 4K downloading service. We’re populating that now with 4K feature films, primarily from Sony Pictures, but there are other short-form films from other production houses.”
When asked if other studios will join in and release 4K movies, Molyneux revealed that Video Unlimited for its standard-definition and HD content has had a good relationship with studios.
With the Playstation 4 supporting 4K resolutions, we will be interested to see if that console is included.
Also known as Ultra HD, the platform offers nearly 4 times the resolution of current 1080P televisions. The television reaches its new standard by nearly doubling horizontal and vertical pixel directional counts.
Currently, a 55-inch Sony TV with 4K resolution costs consumers around $5,000.
There could be one setback for 4K downloads over a broadband connect. Many ISP’s already place a monthly limit on the amount of data that can be transferred without additional costs. For example, my Mediacom services provides me with 250GB of data transferred per month followed by $10 per each additional 50GB. A standard HD show already costs me 2.7GB to stream per hour. As TV resolutions increase, so does the amount of bandwidth used to download movies.
