‘Dear Mr. Watterson,’ Calvin & Hobbes Documentary, Gets A Trailer [Video]

The beloved and long-running comic strip Calvin & Hobbes is finally coming to the big screen, sort of. A documentary called Dear Mr. Watterson pays tribute to Bill Watterson, the creator of the comic’s iconic characters.

Even though the strip ended nearly 20 years ago, Calvin & Hobbes still enjoys a large fan base. Due to Watterson’s influence and following, his legacy is being honored in the documentary Dear Mr. Watterson, which will open on November 15.

Try to view the documentary as a love letter from fans of Calvin & Hobbes to the strip’s creator, Bill Watterson. Filmmaker Joel Allen Schroeder funded the project through Kickstarter and went out to interview the comic’s many fans.

An interesting aspect of the documentary is the focus on Watterson’s anti-merchandising creed. He was famous, even notorious, for his principled refusal of Calvin & Hobbes merchandising. He also avoids any spotlight and still refuses to do interviews to this day.

Schroeder’s documentary honors Watterson’s integrity, and focuses on the fans and the cult following of his hit comic strip rather than trying to track down the great creator himself.

The trailer has actually been online for a while now, but has been making viral rounds today after a small New York Times piece caught the attention of entertainment sites like Empire. Just like Watterson’s creations, people seek out more Calvin & Hobbes. It’s sneaky like that.
