‘The Glee Project’ Canceled By Oxygen

The Glee Project has been canceled by Oxygen after two seasons.

A spokesman for the network said the decision had nothing to do with the sudden death of Glee star Cory Monteith. The 31-year-old, who appeared on all four seasons of Glee, served as a mentor on the competition series. He was found dead in his hotel room in Vancouver, and it was reported that he had died from a drug overdose. According to reports, Monteith was partying with friends and had been drinking alcohol the night he died. There were also unidentified substances found in the room, and police fast-tracked an autopsy and toxicology tests.

Winners from the series receive a major arc on the Fox series, and past winners include Samuel Larsen (Joe Hart), Damian McGinty, Jr. (Rory Flanagan), and Blake Jenner, Jr (Ryder Lynn). Runners-up Lindsay Pearce and Alex Newell also scored two-episode arcs as Harmony and Wade “Unique” Adams, respectively.

Oxygen wanted to bring The Glee Project back, but a late renewal for Glee made it too late for a third season turnaround. The network wanted the series to be consistent with Glee‘s air pattern, but when the Fox series was renewed for seasons five and six in April, it would have been at least 18 months before the series would have aired again.

The network said in a statement:

“The Glee Project will not be returning to Oxygen but we are extremely proud of this series which launched the careers of several talented individuals. The show had so much heart and we thank Ryan Murphy and all of the creative talent who helped make the series a critical darling.”

The first season finale of The Glee Project drew a record 1.2 million viewers, but the second season finale drew only 821,000 viewers.
