Pouncey Brothers Free Aaron Hernandez Hats Raise A Fuss [Photo]

The Pouncey brothers’ Aaron Hernandez hats are creating a stir, with a photograph of twins Maurkice and Mike Pouncey wearing “Free Hernandez” caps in support of their former teammate. According to Bay News 9, the 24-year-old twins wore the hats in a Miami, Florida club on Saturday night while celebrating their birthdays.

Mike Pouncey was Hernandez’ roommate in college at the University of Florida. The three men were close, and Bleacher Report noted that there are reports that they were with Aaron Hernandez in 2007 at a nightclub during an earlier shooting.

Therefore, a rumor was floated Monday that the brothers’ NFL teams would have a discussion with them about appropriate behavior in light of the fact that Hernandez is currently in jail awaiting trial for the murder of Odin Lloyd.

The Free Hernandez Facebook page liked the photo and posted it to their page, although it seemed to originally come from Miami events planner Lisa Mion’s Instagram account. “Funny how I take a pic of my husband & close friends @maurkicepouncey mikepouncey & its all over the internet,” she commented.

As for the Free Aaron Hernandez community, their whole purpose is “to show support for NFL superstar & former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez. We believe he is an innocent man until proven guilty.”

But wearing a “Free Hernandez” hat may have been taking the presumption of innocence too far for the NFL. Whether he got a talking-to or not, Maurkice Pouncey has now released this statement to Twitter:

“I fully recognize the seriousness of the situation involving my former teammate, and I regret that my actions appear to make light of that serious situation. I apologize to anyone who was offended by my actions.”

Some people have decided that they just can’t figure out Florida:

Media sources including Fox Sports said that both Pouncey brothers have now apologized for the supposedly offensive headgear.

I saw a couple of grumbles on Twitter that the brothers should be fined for wearing the hats, but I don’t know about all that. Can you in good conscience fine a man for wearing a man to support a former friend and roommate who hasn’t yet been convicted of a crime?

What’s your take on the Pouncey brothers’ Aaron Hernandez caps?
