Metroid creator: Nintendo’s next console will “leave your mouth open”

It may lack HD visuals and brilliant third-party games, but the Wii can justifiably claim to be a trailblazing console.

And, while Sony and Microsoft shamelessly attempt to mimic Nintendo’s success with Kinect and PlayStation Move, Metroid creator Yoshio Sakamoto reckons the next console from Ninty will “leave your mouth open”:

“At Nintendo we always have the obligation to surprise users with a new game console. We have never done what others have. We prefer to create something new that catches attention, and I think this will continue this time as well. Surely the new Nintendo machine will leave you all with your mouth open.”

Obviously, the successor to Wii is probably years off, but after that console and the Nintendo DS family of gaming handhelds, who’d bet against Nintendo creating another outside-the-box machine?

Sakamoto’s comments follow on from those of Nintendo president Satoru Iwata last year, who talked about including “meaningful” surprises for gamers in the next Nintendo home console. I’m guessing that means something more than the gimmick that is 3D, which should be old hat by the time Wii 2 (or whatever) rolls around. Speculate away!
