Lauryn Hill Convicted, 3 Month Prison Sentence Begins [Video]

Lauryn Hill was sent to a Connecticut jail on Monday to serve three months for tax evasion.

The multi-millionaire rapper was sentenced for not paying her taxes over a period of ten years. She is said to owe the tax authorities in excess of $1 million.

Ed Ross, from the federal Bureau of Prisons, said that Lauryn Hill went to the Danbury federal prison to begin her sentence.

The prison is a minimum security facility, home to people convicted for mainly white collar crimes. Prisoners live in open-dorm quarters and assigned tasks such as gardening and food service.

Grammy award winner Hill was convicted at a Newark court back in May this year. She was found guilty of failing to pay taxes due on nearly $2 million which she earned from 2005 to 2007. There were also unpaid federal taxes she was supposed to pay but didn’t.

Hill’s attorney tried to achieve probation instead of a prison sentence for her, saying she had paid her taxes by all the charity work she had done in her life.

Sandra Moser, the assistant U.S. Attorney who sentenced Hill, did acknowledge the star’s talent and work with poor children but said that her actions were: “A parade of excuses centering around her feeling put upon”

Lauryn Hill is due to serve an additional three months under home confinement and will on parole for at least a year.
