Scientists create synthetic corneas – from yeast and human DNA

The next time you go for a beer take a moment and consider the wonder of one of the principal ingredients of that beer – yeast.

Apparently scientists in Canada and Sweden have discovered a way to create synthetic corneas using that self-same yeast and our very own DNA. They do this by plugging in human DNA into genetically-engineered yeast which created a human protein that can be placed into molds to create the artificial corneas. These corneas can then be surgically attached to human eyes.
