John Mayer Says New Song Isn’t About Taylor Swift [Listen]

Singing songs about your exes isn’t John Mayer’s game like it is Taylor Swift’s. Or is it?

Many gossip blogs have surmised that Mayer’s new track “Paper Doll” is about Swift, whom he dated several years ago.

Swift’s 2010 song “Dear John” was confirmed to be about their relationship and break-up, with Mayer saying he was “humiliated” by the track, and criticizing Swift for “cheap songwriting.”

So it’s strange that it would take three years to pen a rebuttal when he finds that kind of thing “cheap,” but that’s what gossip rags are saying after John Mayer’s performance of “Paper Doll” on Today this week.

Co-host Willie Geist put him on the spot and asked him who the girl was he was singing about. Mayer dodged the question.

“Songwriters write songs because of people, about people … Anything someone else wrote is their reception of the song. I don’t get involved; it’s none of my business.”

But many are convinced that “Paper Doll” is the long-awaited rebuttal to “Dear John,” the latter of which included the lyrics: “I’ll look back and regret how I ignored when they said run as fast as you can.”

“Paper Doll” includes what many see as a clear reference to Swift’s single “22” with the line: “You’re like 22 girls in one/And none of them know what they’re running from/Was it just too far to fall for a little paper doll?”

What do you think? Is John Mayer’s “Paper Doll” a revenge song for Taylor Swift? Sound off below the video:
